The moves began when Beyond the Garden Gate closed and owner Tina McClanahan opened the Rub'N Buff around the corner on Courthouse Square. Simply Southern moved across Church Street into Beyond the Garden Gate's former home. Then Hertford Variety relocated from Hall of Fame Square into Simply Southern's prior location. Meanwhile, one block south, Billy's Auto Care, which had been found by the Town of Hertford to be operating in violation of its ordi nances, moved two blocks west to its present Dobbs Street home. photos by susan Harris Four injured in two US 17 accidents CATHY WILSON Editorial Assistant Four people were injured in two separate accidents on US Highway 17 recently According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, both drivers were injured July 6 when two vehiples collided on US 17 South, approxi mately 50 feet from the intersec tion with US 17 Business (Edenton Road Street.) One of the drivers was later flown by helicopter to a Virginia hospital. Police say Michael Alan Taylor of Hertford was driving a 2001 Pontiac southbound on US 17 when the vehicle crossed the median and collided with a 1998 Saturn travel ing northbound. Mary St. Claire of Elizabeth City drove tjie Saturn. After the vehicles collided, the Pontiac continued to travel until it struck a guardrail. Taylor was transported to Albermarle Hospital by local res cue while St. Claire was flown by helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Taylor is charged with driving while impaired in connection with the accident, which was investigat ed by Trooper E.D. Goodwin Jr. On July 9, two people were injured when their vehicles collid ed at the north intersection of US 17 Business and US 17 Bypass at New Hope Road,; Police reports state that a 1995 Honda, driven by Susan Milam of Eastville, Va., was traveling north bound on US 17 North Bypass when the vehicle ran a red light and collided with a 2005 Buick attempting to turn left from New Hope Road onto US 17. Delores Phillips of Hertford drove the Buick. Both drivers were trans ported to Albermarle Hospital by local rescue. Milam is charged with a red light violation in connection with the accident, which was also inves tigated by Goodwin. Courtroom will be filled with music Sunday evening The Albemarle Symphony Orchestra and the Albemarle Youth Orchestra will perform this Sunday at 5:30 p.m. inside the historic Perquimans County Courthouse as part of the Summer Breeze con cert series. The concert is free and open to the public. Originally planned as a performance by the Albemarle Strings, the pro gram now includes a per formance by the entire orchestra. This is the last performance of this group with its founder. Dr. Michael Weaver. Weaver joined the Elizabeth City State University faculty in 2003 as its first professor of strings, teaching violin, cello, viola and double bass. In the spring of 2004, he founded the ECSU Albemarle Symphony Orchestra, which is made up of students and civilian musicians from the Albemarle region. This performance is ded icated to Weaver, who is joining the faculty of North Greenville University in Greenville, S.C. this fall. The program begins with the Albemarle Youth Orchestra joined by the Albemarle Strings, fol lowed by the full orchestra performing a program of classical music. Local musician and composer Charles Jones created a special arrangement of “Sonatina” by Giovanni Vitali which features two cellos, a woodwind quintet, a brass quintet and strings. The Summer Breeze Concert Series returns home to the grounds of the Newbold-White House Aug. Three file for office Winfall amends charter SUSAN HARRIS and CATHY WILSON Three incumbents had filed to keep their seats on the governing boards of local municipalities as of Monday afternoon. Hertford Mayor Sid Eley filed on July 6, the day the filing period opened. It clos es Friday. Eley has served two terms as mayor after serv ing eight years as a council man. Councilperson Carlton Davenport also filed last week to keep his seat. Anne White, who is finishing her first term on council, left a message with the newspa per that she intends to seek a second term. White said she had been out of town, which was the reason she could not be reached for last week’s story. All elected positions in Hertford are for four-year terms. In Winfall, Mayor Fred Yates has filed for re-elec tion to a two-year term. Incumbent councilman Kenneth Rominger said last week he will not seek a third term after serving eight years. Bertha Dixon, who was appointed to coimcil, said she had not reached a defin itive decision on nmning, but was leaning toward not seeking a full term in November. Winfall councilpersons serve four-year, staggered terms, but the mayor has been elected every two years per the town’s char ter. On July 9, the town enacted an ordinance amending its charter to extend the mayor’s term to four years beginning with the next regularly sched uled municipal election. The ordinance is subject to approval by the US. Department of Justice. 19 with folk songs of coastal North Carolina, sung and played by Connie Mason. This concert series is sponsored by the Perquimans County Restoration Association, the Perquimans Arts League and the Summer Breeze FANS, local busi ness partners who made donations in support of the series.
